Unattended cremation is also known as, direct cremation, simple cremation or pure cremation. An unattended cremation differs from normal cremations in that there is no service and no family or friends in attendance. Some families will organise a memorial service at a later stage in order to remember the life of the deceased.
The S Clarke and Son approach to direct or pure cremations is quite different from what is commonly offered. This is because we believe in treating the deceased with the same respect and ceremony that we strive to achieve for our attended funerals. Our charge for this service is £1,850 however you will need to add on cremation fees (£408 – £668 depending on which council area) and a doctor’s fee which is £82. The third-party costs for burial can be lower so it is worth having a conversation with us about that if you are open to the idea.
We can upgrade our services to an attended cremation with a service at the crematorium for £320. You would also get to choose the day and time of the service. Plus, there would be the option for £50 to use one of our restrooms where you could sit with the coffin, either open or closed which many families find helpful.

Planning ahead for your funeral is one of the most thoughtful and caring things you can do for your family. You may be considering a direct or pure cremation as one of your options. We would always suggest you have a chat with other family members to make sure they are ok with your choice of a direct service. While you may not like the idea of a funeral service, many families find it a beneficial and important part of the grieving process. If you do take out a direct plan with us your family would always have the option to upgrade the service to a simple or traditional attended service at the time of need which wouldn’t be possible with a call centre based direct cremation provider.
